Dopo la laurea in Filosofia alla Statale di Milano, mi trasferisco a Londra, dove conseguo un Master in Documentary Practice, che mi forma come visual storyteller e cameraman. Nonostante le mie scelte accademiche poco commerciabili e la Grande Recessione, riesco a sbarcare il lunario sui set del cinema indipendente inglese, tra corti, music clip, ma anche video corporate, e branded content - spaziando dalla camera alla regia al montaggio.
Poi mi dedico quasi interamente al documentario, convinto che la realtà superi la fantasia, o di non avere abbastanza fantasia.
Il mio primo documentario breve 'Generation In Transit' viene trasmesso da BBC Three. Amareggiato dalla Brexit, mi sposto a Berlino, dove divento autore e cameraman di numerosi prime-time reportage per il canale ARTE su temi di attualità come il fenomeno migratorio a Lampedusa e la crescita di movimenti nazionalisti in Europa. A New York divento un fellow del Logan Nonfiction Program, grazie al documentario 'The Lesson' di Elena Horn sull'educazione dell'Olocausto in Germania, di cui curo il montaggio e la fotografia. 'Una Giornata di Silvia M.' ottiene il premio Film Commission Torino Piemonte. 'Pizza, Democracy & The Little Prince' ottiene diversi riconoscimenti e un invito alle Nazioni Unite! Sono particolarmente orgoglioso di questo documentario breve sui volontari dell'ambulanza di Milano - per il The Guardian. Per il canale svizzero NZZ realizzo Einsame Alpendörfer, che racconta lo spopolamento dei villaggi alpini.
Rimango ancora sospeso tra realtà e finzione e se posso mi dedico a temi che mettono in questione il mio senso di appartenenza, locale e globale. Le mie ricerche artistiche e giornalistiche mi hanno portato in Turchia, Scandinavia, in Africa orientale e nei Balcani. La sfida più grande è però capire e raccontare il mio paese.
Al momento vivo a Berlino, dove collaboro principalmente come autore e cameraman con il canale pubblico ARTE e ZDF, ma anche con Netflix, BBC Storyworks, e ovunque mi porti il mio prossimo progetto.
After graduating in Philosophy in my hometown Milan, I moved to London, where I earned a Master's degree in Documentary Practice, which thought me visual storytelling and strong camera skills. Despite my two unmarketable academic choices and the Great Recession, I could scrape out a living working on indie film productions, music videos but also branded content and commercials - in all sort of roles, from runner, to camera to directing to editing.
Then I dedicated myself entirely to documentary, as I am convinced that reality exceeds imagination - or that I am lacking imagination.
My first documentary short 'Generation In Transit' was broadcast by BBC Three. After Brexit, I moved to Berlin, where I took courage and became the author and cinematographer of numerous prime-time reportages for the public channel ARTE which speak about current social phenomenons like the migration crisis in Lampedusa and the rising nationalisms in Europe. I am a Logan Nonfiction fellow in New York thanks to the acclaim following the documentary 'The Lesson' by Elena Horn about Holocaust education in Germany, at which I worked as cinematographer and editor. I am particularly proud of my short documentary 'Life and death with a coronavirus ambulance volunteer in Milan' for The Guardian and 'Una Giornata di Silvia M.', which won the Torino Piemonte Film Commission award. 'Pizza, Democracy & The Little Prince' screened by the UN headquarter and won international awards. For the Swiss channel NZZ, I made Einsame Alpendörfer, which is about the depopulation of Alpine villages.
I am especially drawn to themes that allow me to explore my sense of community, whether it is local or global. My artistic and journalistic endeavours brought me to Turkey, Scandinavia, East Africa and in the Balkans. However, my biggest challenge is to understand and film my own country.
Currently, I live in Berlin, where I mainly collaborates as author and cinematographer with the public service channels ARTE and ZDF, but also with Netflix, BBC Storyworks and wherever my next project takes me.
